Unfortunately, Mass Murder of Children Nothing New

We have all been saddened, and outraged with the murders of 20 children and 6 adults at Sandy Hook School. Political leaders, and others are calling for new measures to stop violence.  In the coming weeks pushes will come for new gun control measures, mental health procedures and better ways to fight violence. While studying new measures may help in the future, the key issue is the heart.

Early in Scripture we read, “Now Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.” (Genesis 4:8 NIV)

Later we read, “When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.” (Matthew 2:16 NIV)

In Michigan in 1927 38 elementary school children were killed along with four adults when the school was bombed with dynamite. Fifty-eight others were injured. Andrew Kehoe had been defeated for public office and took revenge on the children. He murdered his wife, and killed himself in the final explosion, an eerie pattern not unlike Sandy Hook.

The key issue is of the heart. When people submit to the Lord, God then transforms them for good. When people refuse to follow the Lord the enemy often uses these people for evil.

For the time of Able and Cain to today at Sandy Hook, the key is to reach people for the Lord. If we are angry and moved by Sandy Hook, we can start now by sharing Christ with others. New laws and regulations will not transform people, only the Lord can, and will. He is waiting for us to act now.
