NOAA Satellite Failure Mat Affect Storm Warnings

The United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association experienced a satellite failure this past week, just as the 2013 hurricane season is ready to start. Forecasters expect a very active season.

NOAA operates other satellites that can pick up part of the slack. The problem is when a storm appears to form, or may be reaching landfall, a constant eye on the system helps forecasters be more exact on the expected strength, location and danger from each storm.

We need to keep this in mind if a storm comes near you. Given the increased difficulty of forecasting, we need to be a bit more careful in preparations and evacuating when necessary.
