A second anniversary memorial service in Los Angles for the victims in Japan in of the tsunami and earthquake that devastated the country.

During the event LA residents were advised to prepare for a minimum of two weeks on their own, rather then the older, 72 hour standard.  “A lot of people don’t realize that we are earthquake prone in California, but we also could get a tsunami,” Los Angeles County Fire Asst. Chief David Stone said. “We just haven’t had one in a long time.”

This is good advice for anyone, as those in the path of a major event can testify.

If you are able you support yourself, and family for a minimum of 2 weeks, you will likely bridge the time until help may arrive. In a lessor emergency, you will have extra supplies to share.

My advice to anyone is to determine what events you need to prepare for, and then get ready. Far better to be several years early, then 15 minutes late.

A good goal is keeping a 72 hour backpack of supplies in your car, and two weeks of necessities in your home, minimum.
