Center Stage

Devotional inspired by the song, Clear the Stage by Jimmy Needham

http://bit.ly/HEqmOT

“And take heed, lest you lift your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun, the moon, and the stars, all the host of heaven, you feel driven to worship them and serve them, which the Lord your God has given to all the peoples under the whole heaven as a heritage”. Deuteronomy 4:19

Reading this verse, can we compare the sun, the moon and the stars and all the host of heaven to the visuals that we are so familiar with and expect as the acceptable “worship service”? What if the stage were clear?

Picture with me an empty stage void of all stimulus-

No keyboard, nor drums, no screen or overhead projecting lyrics to read or sing.

No lights, or sound other than your voice.

No band, orchestra or choir, or worship team, you are alone.

No congregation, no pastoral team….

You facing an empty stage,

What would draw you into true worship?

The song, “Clear the Stage”, challenges us to examine our hearts and minds and consider whom, why, what we worship.  What does it take for us to “crush the idols, take a break from all the plans we have made and simply sit alone and wait for God to whisper”?

“Anything I put before my God is an idol

Anything I want with all m heart is an idol

Anything I can’t stop thinking of is an idol

Anything that I give all my love is an idol”

But if your [mind and] heart turn away and you will not hear, but are drawn away to worship other gods and serve them, I declare to you today that you shall surely perish, and you shall not live long in the land which you pass over the Jordan to enter and possess.  Deuteronomy 30:17,18

Take time now to examine your heart and mind asking God to reveal to you anything or anyone that has or is taking His place.  Yes, “worship is more than a song” when the song you sing focuses on God who is center of your life.

·      Examine your heart and mind asking God to reveal any idols you have set before Him.

·      What do you need to change?

·      Will you approach worship as more than an artificial atmosphere set by man, or will you now worship as it was intended….for God and God alone.
