The four calling birds are the first four books of the New Testament.

  1. Matthew
  2. Mark
  3. Luke
  4. John

Also knows as the Gospels, these books tell the story of Jesus. The traditional definition of a “Calling Bird” is simply a “Black bird.” Over time the word “Colly” which meant black was changed to “Calling.” In symbolism, the blackbird represents: “those who are tempted by carnal pleasure.”

Six Geese a Laying

According to this site, Geese represent providence and vigilance. Interestingly, the “six geese a laying” is representative of the six days of creation prior to God’s resting on the seventh day.
