Declare Your Emergency Independence

Today we celebrate Independence day and give thanks to the author of true independence, Jesus.

Over the past week we have witnessed many wildfires devastate homes in the west, massive tropical storm flooding in Florida and the thunderstorm damage in the east. As of this morning over 3 million people were without power, five days after the storm passed, many may not have power until Friday.

Many emergency events are widespread and last a long time, days without power is an eternity with 95 degree temperatures.

After each event we see pictures of empty store shelves, no gasoline available, no ice and too little water. Despite warnings very few people prepare. As individuals, churches and communities we are still woefully unprepared when these widespread emergencies hit.

Joseph sounded a warning to Pharaoh, a warning that was headed. As a result a nation became prepared.  As these disasters continue to strike we can either prepare, or not. Given I do no know the future, I have no idea where the next emergency event will strike. I do know the story line will be the same, no food or water on store shelves, no gas, no power, with little emergency aid.

We can declare our independence by preparing a disaster preparedness check list, and then acting by following through. Buy extra food when it’s on sale, put aside enough for your family for two weeks, or even better extra to help your neighbors.
