Avalanche- A lesson in Being Prepared

This week three skiers were killed near Stevens Pass Ski Resort in Washington state while skiing off the regular ski trails. Twelve other skiers survived. One skier, Elyse Saugstad, deployed an air bag, credited with saving her life.  The other skiers, including those who died carried other life saving equipment, an emergency beacon, a probe and shovel all basic survival equipment when skiing in dangers conditions.

Taking any emergency equipment requires the mental thought, “Something may happen, I need to be ready”. We buy fire insurance because we know a fire is possible, despite our precautions, so we protect ourselves with an insurance policy.

We tend to deny bad things could happen. When we do, we often miss taking the very precautions that could save a life.

We need to mentally balance the likelihood of future events, and them act. In this case, an airbag costing about $800.00 likely would have saved the other three. When experiencing dangers situations, we need to build in every advantage we can.

Reinforcing a home, or digging a tornado shelter costs time and money. Living in Arizona, preparing for a tornado isn’t useful, but if I was living in Oklahoma you can bet I would have a solid plan.

Review your situation, determine what risks you and your family may face. Then take action. If you ski off trails in avalanche prone places, invest in an airbag. If you live in the Arizona desert put aside water.

As you think through the steps you need to take in preparing, you then face these possible events. That’s the first step in becoming a Ready Christian, start here with Ready Christian training: http://bit.ly/ohUZV8
