Ants to Predict Earthquakes?

Dr. Gabriele Berberich, of the University Duisburg-Essen in Germany, conducted an interesting study.

In Germany, Red Wood ants build colonies right along fault lines.

The normal pattern is for the ants to collect food all day and then rest at night. Just before an earthquake the ants do not go back to their mound, they stay outside all night. Then after the quake, the return to the normal schedule. The study has documented this behavior during 10 small earth quakes.

The scientists are not sure why the change, they speculate they mat sense a change in the earths magnetic field. Further research may provide clues to predicting future earth quakes, and helping us be ready.
