During an emergency starting fire may be important. You are able to obtain heat, smoke for rescuers to see, the ability to heat water and do simple cooking and to keep animals away.

A good fire starter should be part of any emergency supply kit. If you don’t have a starter, you may have the ingredients in your first aid kit.

Take several cotton balls from your kit, and mix generously with petroleum jelly. Presto, you can light a match and start a fire quickly. These flare out quickly so be sure to have small twigs and kindling ready to keep the little blaze going.

These work in wet conditions as the cotton is always stored dry.
